Carnelian Woman

About Carnelian Woman

In the summer of 2021, Herald (performing as Kodi Hannah and still reeling from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic) was in desperate need of a musical collaborator in order to continue providing live entertainment during the summer months in Alaska. Reaching a dead end in her search, she turned to social media for help. Expecting scraps and more obstacles, she received a response to her flyer from a musician by the name of Dawson Gentleman. It didn’t take long for the pair to click, as they had both attended the same high school and knew of each other through mutual friends. Herald never expected Dawson to be interested in the kind of music she wanted to create, but they quickly bonded over things like Tenacious D and 70’s psychedelic rock.

During one of their first writing sessions together, they created ‘Storms’ and ‘Outlaw’; two of their biggest anthems to date. The stars aligned. From that point on, they became musical partners and began the iconic duo Carnelian Woman.

Herald

Through many evolutions of style and creative direction, Herald has stayed consistent in the passion for what she does. She began writing songs as a child and would present them to her family as gifts. She fondly remembers performing to sold-out arenas of grass blades in her backyard using the handle of her jump rope as a microphone. Now, as the leading force behind the vocals and lyricism of Carnelian Woman, she continues to keep one thing at the forefront: emotional honesty.

Hailing from the distinct Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and beginning her musical persuit at just 17 years old, Heri’s artistic fervor and bittersweet penmanship have become a staple for Carnelian Woman’s moody sound.

Dawson

Born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, Dawson Gentleman grew up in a family of musicians: his mother played piano and sang, his father is a guitar player and singer, and his step-mom is a drummer. Dawson got an early start playing music with the support of his parents when they bought him his first drum set at just 5 years old. Many loud noises later, Dawson picked up a guitar and quickly fell in love with the versatility of the instrument. From at-home guitar lessons with dad to co-writing his first album with his best friend, Dawson is now one half of Carnelian Woman where he is able to embrace his passion of making music and having fun doing it.

Before their February 24th show at The Pub, I sat down with Carnelian Woman to ask a few questions about their music, their origins, and their hopes for the future as musical collaborators.

Dawson Gentleman is futzing with his electric guitar on stage. He is wearing a black tee with Carnelian Woman written in orange-red, dark olive baggy pants for comfort, black sneakers, and a necklace of (apporpriately so) a Carnelian stone.
